Reporters can help you to understand the mechanisms by which a gene is induced or repressed, the consequences of transcription factor binding, and the effect of sequence variants on promoter function. Fluorescent reporters are ideal for measurements at the single-cell level such as imaging, high content screening (HCS), and in vivo reporting. Chemiluminescent reporters are suitable for cell-population assays, and secreted chemiluminescent reporters have the additional benefits of eliminating lysis and providing an accurate snapshot of transient promoter activity in a live cell assay.
