Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs) are complexes of RNA and protein in the nucleus that are involved in gene transcription and subsequent post-transcriptional modification of the newly synthesized RNA (pre-mRNA). After RNA splicing, hnRNPs remain bound to spliced introns and target them for subsequent degradation. hnRNPs also play a role in transporting mature mRNAs out of the nucleus. Over 30 hnRNPs are known in humans. hnRNP B1, also called hnRNP A2/B1, is encoded by the HNRPA2B1 gene, and belongs to the A/B subfamily of ubiquitously expressed hnRNPs. Alternative splicing results in two transcript variants that encode different isoforms. hnRNP A2/B1 has been shown to interact with casein kinase 2-alpha-1. Studies in mice suggest that hnRNP A2/B1 may regulate several tumor suppressors and oncogenes in glioblastomas. hnRNP B1 is also known as hnRNP A2/B1, hnRNP A2B1, hnRNP A2, RNPA2, HNRPA2, HNRPB1, SNRPB1, HNRNPA2, HNRNPB1, and HNRPA2B1.
