Chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 1 (CXCL1) is a small cytokine belonging to the CXC chemokine subfamily. It was previously known as GRO1 oncogene, GRO-alpha, fibroblast secretory protein (FSP), and melanoma growth stimulating activity alpha (MSGA-alpha). CXCL1 is also known as neutrophil-activating protein 3 (NAP-3), growth-regulated alpha protein, C-X-C motif chemokine 1, SCYB1, and GROA. The rat homolog of human CXCL1 is known as CINC-1. CXCL1 is expressed by macrophages, neutrophils, and epithelial cells. It is secreted by human melanoma cells, has mitogenic properties, and is implicated in melanoma pathogenesis. CXCL1 plays a role in spinal cord development by inhibiting the migration of oligodendrocyte precursors. It also acts as a chemoattractant for neutrophils, and is involved in angiogenesis, inflammation, wound healing, and tumorigenesis. CXCL1 acts by signaling through the chemokine receptor CXCR2. Studies in mice have shown that CXCL1 decreased the severity of multiple sclerosis and may offer a neuroprotective function.
