Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), encoded by the CSF3 gene in humans, is a cytokine that controls the production, differentiation, and function of granulocytes. G-CSF stimulates the production of granulocytes and stem cells in bone marrow, and their subsequent release into the circulatory system. G-CSF is expressed in endothelial cells, macrophages, and several other types of immune cells. G-CSF also regulates the differentiation and propagation of neutrophil precursors using a variety of pathways mediated by kinases such as JAK, STAT, MAPK, PI3K, and protein kinase B. Recombinant G-CSF is used in therapy for some cancer patients to assist recovery from neutropenia. G-CSF is also known as colony-stimulating factor 3 (CSF-3), filgrastim, lenograstim, pluripoietin, C17orf331, MGC45931, and CSF3OS.
