The accumulation of amyloid-beta protein in the cerebral cortex in Alzheimer's disease (AD) is responsible for plaque formation. Amyloid-beta is produced by proteolytic cleavage of amyloid precursor protein (APP), mediated by the enzymes beta- and gamma-secretase. The cleavage reaction produces a number of peptides, ranging from 36 to 43 amino acids in length. This kit can detect all amyloid-beta variants that are cleaved at the C-terminal side; however, it cannot detect variants smaller than amyloid-beta (1-16).
This kit is a solid-phase sandwich ELISA using two antibodies that are specific to human amyloid-beta (1-x) variants; one is precoated on the ELISA plate and the other is HRP-conjugated. This assay kit can be used to measure human amyloid-beta protein (1-x) variants in EDTA-plasma, cerebrospinal fluid, serum, cell culture media, or brain extract.
