Influenza Detection and Typing: Human Influenza Virus Antibodies

The influenza virus is classified into three groups, A, B and C, based on key differences in the viral nuclear protein (NP). The basic structure of the influenza virus may be seen by clicking on the Images and Data tab below. Influenza virus particles contain head and stem regions that play vital roles in infection: The viral head region contains a receptor domain that binds the host cell, while the viral stem region carries a specific amino acid sequence that is necessary for the fusion of the virus with its host cell.

Influenza virus is further classified into subtypes based on its neuraminidase (NA) and haemagglutinin (HA) differences, both of which are key viral surface glycoproteins. Viral nuclear and glycoproteins are both targeted by Takara's human influenza virus antibodies in the process of influenza detection and typing. Currently, several major influenza epidemics have been attributed to influenza A and influenza B, or more specifically influenza A subtype H3 and influenza B subtype H1. These influenza H1N1 and H3N2 subtypes are well-known to result in severe febrile illness.

Specificity

Anti-Human Influenza A (H1N1, H2N2)

  • This antibody specifically recognizes the highly conserved HA stem epitope in H1N1 and H2N2 viruses.
  • No cross-reactivity with HA in the influenza A H3N2 subtype.
  • Refer to the monoclonal antibody titer table for viral titer information.
  • This antibody has H1N1 and H2N2 virus neutralization activity.
  • This antibody does not affect viral HA inhibition tests.

Anti-Human Influenza A (H3N2)

  • This antibody specifically recognizes the HA stem epitope in the H3N2 virus.
  • This antibody does not cross react with HA in H1N1 and H2N2 subtypes of Influenza A virus.
  • Refer to the monoclonal antibody titer table for viral titer information.
  • This antibody cross-reacts A/duck/Czechoslovakia/1/56 (H4N6) and A/chicken/Germany "N"/49 (H10N7) in addition to human influenza virus.
  • This antibody has no effect on haemagglutination inhibition test for all subtypes of virus.

Anti-Human Influenza A (H1, H2, H3)

  • This antibody specifically recognizes the membrane protein epitope in all subtypes of Influenza A virus, including H1N1, H2N2 and H3N2.

Anti-Human Influenza B

  • This antibody specifically recognizes the nuclear protein (NP) epitope of Influenza B virus.
  • Refer to the monoclonal antibody titer table for viral titer information.

Polyclonal antibody to Human Influenza A, B

  • Antibody reacts with epitopes of Influenza A/PR/8/34 (H1N1), A/Aichi/2/68 (H3N2) and B/Nagaski/1/87.
  • Antibody is estimated to react equally with both Influenza A and B virus.
