September 6, 2016 | In Memoriam: Roger Tsien, Nobel Laureate

Along with the worldwide scientific community, we at Takara Bio USA were deeply saddened by the loss of Nobel Laureate and distinguished scientist Roger Tsien on August 24, 2016. Our sincere condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and students.

Through his work on the discovery and development of green fluorescent protein (GFP), he was one of only a handful of scientists to truly revolutionize and inspire the entire field of the life sciences. He provided the world with a completely new biological toolset for molecular and cell biology, enabling breakthroughs in methods of visual analysis—in vivo and in real time—that in turn have led to breakthroughs in many disciplines of biology and medicine.

Thank you, Dr. Tsien, for your dedication, brilliant mind, and hard work. Thank you for making the world a brighter and more colorful place.

December 7, 2015 | Tech Note: In-Fusion Cloning Outperforms TOPO Cloning

For labs that do a lot of cloning, lengthy and unpredictable methods such as the TOPO cloning workflow can really slow down progress. Juanita Von Dwingelo, a Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Louisville who does yeast two-hybrid studies, noted that the TOPO method her lab was using took five days from start to finish and had an efficiency of 50–75% at best. After trying In-Fusion Cloning technology, Juanita said she would use In-Fusion Cloning products again over the TOPO method, as the former reduced the time to create her clone by two days and had a 100% cloning efficiency. Takara Clontech recently had its 10th anniversary! To commemorate the occasion, we celebrated with a kagami biraki ceremony—a 300-year-old traditional Japanese ceremony wherein a barrel of sake is opened with a wooden mallet. The practice originates from the 4th Tokugawa Shogun, who mandated that a barrel of sake be opened before an important battle to bring good fortune to the army. The battle afterwards was, indeed, successful, and the ceremony became a very popular custom. It's been a great 10 years, and we look forward to many more together!
