Clontech offers an insect cell line and two media formulated for the special requirements of Baculovirus Expression Systems: IPLB-Sf21 Cells, BacPAK Complete Medium, and BacPAK Grace’s Basic Medium.
IPLB-Sf21 Insect Cells
These cells are used as a host for propagating the Autographa californica multiple-enveloped nuclear polyhedrosis virus (AcMNPV) and its expression vector derivatives generated from our BacPAK system. The IPLB-Sf21 cell line is derived from pupal ovaries of the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda.
BacPAK Complete Medium
This insect medium is fully supplemented and provides ideal growth conditions for the Spodoptera frugiperda cells (Sf21 or Sf9) used with the BacPAK Baculovirus Expression System and other baculoviral systems. This medium is based on TNM-FH and contains 10% fetal bovine serum and gentamicin. It is ready to be used without any supplementation.
BacPAK Grace’s Basic Medium
This is a base medium without any proteinaceous supplements. Because the presence of protein can inhibit transfection, use of this medium helps to maximize transfection efficiency. BacPAK Grace’s Basic Medium can easily be supplemented to make TNM-FH medium.
