The (pro)renin receptor is responsible for tissue uptake of circulating renin/prorenin. This transmembrane receptor binds prorenin with higher affinity than renin. Binding of renin/prorenin to the receptor activates a pathway that results in generation of angiotensin. Research into (pro)renin receptor may uncover new strategies for suppressing tissue RAA (Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone) system overactivation. Human (pro)renin receptor is also involved in angiotensin-independent pathways that contribute to myocardial fibrosis and deterioration of cardiac function.
